An important implication of the implicit learning research is that any technologies that could accelerate market exposure would be of immense benefit to the development of traders. These technologies would include ones that simulate and play back market action for traders so that they can immerse themselves in market patterns even outside normal trading hours.

When traders experience a large number of examples of trading patterns in a compressed fashion, they may gain the ability to implicitly abstract essential features of markets that are ready to move. The key to this experience is generating enough examples and presenting them in a closely spaced manner.

Conducting the trials with the same data and the same displays that one would experience in trading could be expected to enhance the transfer of implicit learning to real-time trading.

As we all know learning process in trading requires lots of screen time and if you're determined to succeed there are tools available today that could significantly accelerate this process. In my view, Tick Replay is the ultimate tool for traders who want to accelerate and condition their knowledge of market patterns with Woodie's CCI.

[u:357c447b69][b:357c447b69]How to set up Tick Replay in eSignal[/u:357c447b69][/b:357c447b69]

The new playback (simulator) system uses REAL data, which reflects the real market, including the timing of institutional buyers and sellers. Since computer-generated numbers can’t do this because they are artificially created, by using this feature of eSignal, you are far ahead of other simulators, and it is included with eSignal for free.

With the new Woodie’s CCI Trading Panel, you can do a “live” playback with all of the functions available same as in real-time trading. If you use Woodie's Pivots, they also will be fully operational, changing at the end of each day on multi-day playbacks. The High and Low of the day will also reset when the next playback day starts. Now you can put up several charts with different time frames and they will move and react live at the same time so that you can compare their effectiveness. For example, you can simultaneously show a 344 tick and 15 minute EUR charts. This will clearly show you what time frame best fits your trading style in a particular market.

Another useful feature of trading panel is Woodie’s Triangles. When you are making trades, either live or in a playback mode, you want to be able to concentrate on watching the CCI signals. Instead of marking trade entries and exits on paper and looking at price, when you make a trade, just place a Woodie’s Triangle at that point on the chart as it is live and moving. It is quick and easy. This accomplishes two things. First, it lets you trade on the pattern and not the price and second, you can concentrate on trading and not be constantly refocusing your attention from paper to chart and back again. Of course, Woodie’s Triangles work when trading live, also, not just when in playback mode.

All of the Help Bubbles are also working, so if you are in doubt about something on the chart, put the playback on “Pause” and check all of the nuances of that play by clicking the small question mark near the bottom of the chart and pointing the cursor at the area of interest. Once you find the answer, hit the “Play” button to continue practicing.

[u:357c447b69][b:357c447b69]Saving current layout and creating new page[/u:357c447b69][/b:357c447b69]

1) First save your current screen layout. Go to PAGE menu and select SAVE PAGE.
2) Go to one of the current charts, right-click and then go to STYLE TEMPLATE and then click SET AS DEFAULT. This now means that your new playback charts will look exactly like the one you just set as default.
3) Go to menu PAGE, then select NEW PAGE. You should now have a blank chart layout, but don’t worry, you haven’t lost anything, because your previous charts layout has been saved.

[u:357c447b69][b:357c447b69] Adding the chart[/u:357c447b69][/b:357c447b69]

4) Go to menu FILE, then NEW, then ADVANCED CHART, then DEFAULT and you should have new chart same as per saved default style template. Maximize chart to the full screen.
5) Change the chart symbol to $PLAYBACK.

[u:357c447b69][b:357c447b69]Downloading tick data[/u:357c447b69][/b:357c447b69]

6) Go to menu TOOLS, then TICK REPLAY, then TICK DOWNLOADER.
7) When the Tick Downloader window comes up, we will use the EUR/USD as an example. In the Symbol field type EUR A0-FX.
8 ) In the # of days field, lets start with 8 days. For all of the pivots to be correct, you should have a minimum of 3 days of data.
9) Click File name and type in [b:357c447b69]EUR 8 day tick download[/b:357c447b69] or pick a different name you like.
10) Click the download button and wait till it is finished.

[u:357c447b69][b:357c447b69]Tick Replay on Forex Data [/u:357c447b69][/b:357c447b69]
To get tick replay working with Forex data currently this requires a simple workaround and editing the file with all the tick data:

11) Open the tick data file you saved [b:357c447b69]EUR 8 day tick download[/b:357c447b69] in UltraEdit (don't use standard Notepad - too slow). Run 'Search and replace' edit on the following data string:

Find what: Q,0
Replace with: T,0

12) Save and close tick data file.

[u:357c447b69][b:357c447b69]Final steps[/b:357c447b69][/u:357c447b69]

13) Go to menu TOOLS, then TICK REPLAY, then TICK DOWNLOAD. Per the dialog box, select file [b:357c447b69]EUR 8 Day Tick Download[/b:357c447b69] and click the open button.
14) A new dialog box should appear. Now click the play button. Your chart should be empty.
15) Now where you see “10 min,” replace it with “60 min” and hit the jump button once or twice. You should then start seeing your chart running.
16) Set the speed of the chart and just start practicing. A higher speed means that you will get through that day’s trades more quickly. Recommended speed is 4x.

I recently tried to use the tick replay. It would load the data but no data appeared on the chart when played. When I contacted E-signal they said they were aware of the problem with Forex replay and would probably be a couple months before they fixed the problem. Anyone else have this same experience???

FX data requires slight modification to the actual data file in order to load properly into Tick Replay. This was explained on eSignal forum under the following post:
noneforum.esignalcentral.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6913

Here is how to resolve this issue:

[u:29d6aa740b][b:29d6aa740b]Tick Replay on Forex Data [/b:29d6aa740b][/u:29d6aa740b]
To get tick replay working with Forex data currently this requires a simple workaround and editing the file with all the tick data:

11) Open the tick data file you saved EUR 8 day tick download in UltraEdit (don't use standard Notepad - too slow). Run [b:29d6aa740b][u:29d6aa740b]'Search and Replace'[/u:29d6aa740b][/b:29d6aa740b] edit on the following data string:

Find what: [b:29d6aa740b]Q,0[/b:29d6aa740b]
Replace with: [b:29d6aa740b]T,0[/b:29d6aa740b]
[/color:29d6aa740b]
12) Save and close tick data file.

Then load tick data file into eSignal... and voila!

Have you downloaded at least 5 days of tick data? I usually download 8 days of tick replay data at the end of each week. Uncompressed tick data file for EUR is about 35 MB in size. Maybe there is not enough data for your eSignal to play back? Alternatively, you could try changing Time Template in eSignal (by right-clicking on chart). Use the one called [b:beb1c0cf1f]Woodies FOREX 24 Hours 5 Days Data[/b:beb1c0cf1f]. Correct Time Template XML file for Woodie's CCI panel should be available from eSignal download site.

Recently I have discovered there is now better alternative to eSignal's tick replay. This solution is called FullShot Professional. What this software does is it allows you to record (screen capture) your entire trading session on as many monitors as you have. I have 6 monitors, 2 of which are dedicated to my main charts which I also record for later playback using FullShot software. You can use timer recording (eg. snapshot your screen every minute or every 5 min). It's totally customizable. Then what you do at the end of each week is replay the entire week's captures at any speed you set it to. I set mine to replay at 60 times (1 image every second) and then vary it during actual playback - slow down during busy times and speed up when markets are in a quiet period. It's like watching a movie on your DVD player, same control features. This way you can replay entire week's trading session in 2-3 hours and see where you've made trading decisions and how you can improve.

Settings I use are as follows:

[list:097c46d910]15min charts = capture every 1 minute
60min charts = capture every 5 mintues
[/list:u:097c46d910]
FullShot allows you to annotate on captured frames which becomes a fantastic journaling tool when used in combination with OneNote 2007. Think of it as an interactive trading journal.

Entire week's recording for 2 monitors set at SXGA resolution 1280x1024 pixels uses up 950MB of space. Images saved in PNG format. After each month you can archive these playback sessions to DVD. One standard DVD 4.5GB holds 4 weeks of FullShot recordings, which is ideal. Having 12 DVDs for full year gives you plenty of practice material to go over when markets are quiet. Like chess players, traders need tons of practice, practice, practice, practice.

The reason why I recently switched from eSignal to FullShot is because of one major drawback of eSignal's tick replay. eSignal can only replay one trading instrument at a time, which really sucks when you're following 12 pairs. Seeing each currency pair moving in the context of the market relative to other pairs is absolutely essential. In addition to that, I also like to see movements on Gold, Silver and Crude Oil, which tends to affect FX market in quite powerful ways. So, if you configure FullShot to capture your charts setup (layout) on just 2 monitors, you can see all currency pairs you're trading move in their respective market context. There are no limits to what you can do with FullShot in terms of how many trading instruments you can capture [u:097c46d910]at the same time[/u:097c46d910]. What you see is what you get. Just remember, this program is designed for capturing only. Use another program of your choice to view captured images as "slide show".

Personally I like ThumbsPlus for its customization features. Slide show mode can be configured to play at custom speed. Rewind, pause or fast forward - helps analysing market conditions preceding your entries and exits in this mode. Keyboard controls are fantastic.

I found it to be as close to real-time trading conditions as you could possibly get. For the price (FullShot Pro license is $89, one-off purchase, no ongoing monthly fees like eSignal), it sure beats all other recording/playback bundles currently available. The only true multi-market playback software today that allows you to do the same is Ninja Trader, but to me it's no use since all my indicators are coded for MetaTrader and VTtrader.

It's funny how you can use software that wasn't even intended for trading, turns out to be ideal solution that allows you to practice like you would in real-time market conditions and improve your trading. We as traders need to have feedback loop that allows us to learn quicker. Being able to walk through our trades after hours in playback mode allows us to see where we went wrong with our analysis and where we were right on the mark.

Dr Brett Steenbarger dedicated his latest book "Enhancing Trader Performance" to this hugely important (but rarely discussed) subject. This is what traders most need - more [b:097c46d910]training[/b:097c46d910] rather than just more education. We need to approach market like professional athletes or chess players who go over their moves after the game. If you haven't read Dr Brett's new book yet, here's a great quote from the first chapter. If you want to see how Dr Brett expands further on this point, I'd recommend you read first chapter of his new book from link below.
